Muurla – Pippi, Emil and the Moomin on mugs, cups and more
Beautiful cups will turn each hot chocolate, coffee or coffee even more heartwarming. The motives designed and selected by the Finish company are heartwarming as well. One can encounter the heroes of a Finish childhood that are luckily also known in Germany. After all, wouldn‘t it be a shame if we hadn‘t gotten to meet Pippi Longstocking and the Moomins or Emil of Lönneberga, missing countless adventures as a result. Muurla helps us remember these characters with various motives on enamel cups and mugs.
From the glass factory to the designer
The glass factory Muurla was founded 1974 and was named after the town that it is located in. Muurla actually lies exactly halfway between Turku and Helsinki and nowadays belongs to the town of Salo. The proximity to the main road of these two important Finish cities turned the factory early on into one of most known “resting areas“ of the country. You could easily take a break, get an insight into our glass manufacturing process and enjoy coffee and a slice of cake from the cups and plates of the company. The “Muurla Coffee & Restaurant”, which is located adjacent to our design store honors these early beginnings. This concept has proved to be successful even in recent times. The Muurla design store has established itself to be quite the tourist attraction, perhaps owing it to the one-hour proximity to the Finish capital.
Extraordinary cups for a beautiful home
The company is most successful with the sale of home collections. Clear lines, simple forms and – with the exception of the motive cups – simple designs donning the design products of the factory while keeping the spirit of Scandinavia in mind – designs which are meanwhile exported into 26 countries. As mentioned before, the most of the company‘s success is scored with just these flashy printed mugs which display the characters from the books of Astrid Lindgren or Tove Jansson.
Dual trend: Moomins and others on enamel cups
Muurla expanded the collection in the year 2010 and produced products from enamel for the first time. The company received the licensing rights for Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga or the Moomins in the same year. The team headed by Muurla founder Julia Uoti created a real trend with Ingrid Vang Nyman‘s and Jansons Mumin‘s motives of Pippi and Emil on the enamel and glass products. People from all over the world fell in love with the protagonists of this beautiful world within the children‘s books and appreciated enamel as the material, as it is very robust and hygienic. The shop in Muurla, which to this day offers its visitors hot drinks and snacks turned gained quite the popularity in the Scandinavian design environment after the production of cups featuring Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga, the Moomins, Snork, Little My or Snufkin. Enamel recently became the material that has gained a lot of popularity. High-quality carbon steel coated with a layer of ceramics which is then reinforced and tightly connected. The resulting cups are neutral in taste, nearly indestructible and wonderfully nostalgic thanks to both the material and the motives.
