Georg Jensen Damask – exquisite bed linen and more home textiles
The brand Georg Jensen Damask considers itself as an interface at which Scandinavian design culture, traditional craft and big history come together. Those ingredients compose a modern textile company, which has specialized on the production of bed linen, towels, damask blankets and more home textiles for a beautiful home and a chic kitchen.
Many centuries of tradition
Already in the 16th century the family Jensen was said to be dealing with textiles. The brand takes shape traceably when Andreas Jensen and Kirsten Christensdatter marry and officially found the company in 1756. One concentrates on weaving of everyday objects for the closer area and hires 5 to 6 journeywomen at that time. Only later the company should be called Georg Jensen Damask and produce chic home textiles like bed linen. The label takes shape not until some generations after Andreas and Kirsten the owner family discovered damask production in Haarlem in the Netherlands and takes it back to Denmark.
It is a fabric challengingly produced, which makes complex patterns and motives possible. The weaving technique was developed in China but the city Damaskus located at the Silk Road in today’s Syria established as the big center from which the fabric has its name. The fabric and the know-how of its production got along further trade ways via Southern Europe to the north. Soon the Dutch city Haarlem was considered as the center. There the fine fabric, which was often produced from silk or later of linen or worsted, fascinated the family with weaving close to Copenhagen. The effort for special looms with a towing device was successful - Georg Jensen Damask as a brand was born.
A modern company
Interestingly, the company was and is not concerned with the popular Danish lifestyle and luxury brand except for the name, the title as royal purveyor to the court of Denmark and the passion for Scandinavian design. Until 1999 it stays in family hand and family owned before a group of investors buys the brand. The “loom of Denmark” richest in tradition should be part of a company for just five years before it gets bought back into family hands by the Hviid family in 2004. The company, at this time economically stricken, is being restructured under the new aegis, sales channels are being renewed and production is being modernized. The success of the company’s typical Scandinavian bed linen, terry products and kitchen textiles came back and stays till today.
With the focus on design, material and workmanship
The list of designers, who let damask and other fabrics become products of high quality, make impressive reading. Next to Arne Jacobsen or Nanna Ditzel in the youngest history, also present luminaries are responsible for the way of Georg Jensen Damask to an icon. Among those ranks the Norwegian Andreas Engesvik, whose work has already been awarded with the Red Dot Design Award and others and who has already designed for Muuto and Iittala. Cecilie Manz or Jette Nevers produce new ideas for the brand, too. Especially in Scandinavia such numerous design prominence and a high-grade quality mutually define each other so that you can rely on the choice of materials and the production depth of Georg Jensen Damsk bed linen, table cloths and towels and also on scandinavian-lifestyle.com, of course.
