Broste Copenhagen – Scandinavian interior design trends since 1955

The Danish company Broste Copenhagen was founded by Ulf Brøste (1904-1970) in 1955. Ulf grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and discovered his passion for craftwork and design at an early age. He was inspired by great architects and designers like Børge Mogensen, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen.

After founding his own brand, Ulf's focus turned to decorating the living area with ceramic and textile products as well as with candles, lanterns, etc. However, he didn't just want his design products to be beautiful, he also wanted them to be accessible to everyone at fair prices. With this in mind, he set out to find young designers and artists who would design a collection for his Broste Copenhagen project. He also had an eye on manufacturing and distribution abroad.

An idea becomes an enterprise

Ulf opened a 3-storey shop in Copenhagen. The building is located beside the Christianshavn Canal and was even named after him later. In fact, it’s still called Brøste Gård today.

The former shop sold antiques, rugs and craftwork. Ulf was extremely successful in compiling and exhibiting an almost historical collection of pictures, artefacts and archaeological finds from Christianshavn. Four more shops, which primarily sold the Broste Copenhagen brand, were opened in Denmark’s capital city. Broste Copenhagen soon became well known for its Danish handicrafts abroad and was one of the companies that made the unique Scandinavian craftwork of the 1950s and 1960s famous worldwide. The label still enjoys great prestige for its pioneering role. The label is now one of Scandinavia's leading interior brands thanks to its constant search for something new and high-quality chic designs at an attractive price.

The balance between Nordic designs and modern trends

Ulf's son Peter continued the business for 40 years and made Broste Copenhagen into a leading enterprise within the realm of interior design. The focus continues to be on ceramics, textiles and candles. However, the brand's collection now also includes items such as table accessories, cutlery, glasses, bed linen, lanterns and more. The products will continue to be designed in Denmark, but will be produced abroad. This ensures that the company founder’s claim guaranteeing good value for money is preserved.

The Norwegian, Kim John Larsen, has been running the company as it's proprietor since 2008. He renewed the collection so that the traditional brand is now a representative of a group of young Danish lifestyle brands, including Bloomingville, Bitz and A Simple Mess.
