Dottir Nordic Design - Lovingly Scandinavian without Nordic minimalism
Every artist develops what they have learned, interprets it and finds their own unmistakable style. Thora Finnsdottir did just that when, as a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, she decided to give Scandinavian design a completely new direction. With the Dottir Nordic Design brand, she has created vases, candlesticks and other decorative accessories for a lively and love-filled home, while renouncing the traditional principles of Scandinavian design.
Storyteller – Dottir Nordic Design Winter Stories
Dottir founder Thora Finnsdottir and her team have thrown the motto “less is more” overboard, trailblazing the opposite of Nordic minimalism with warm designs and cheerful scenes. The colourful Dottir Winter Stories range clearly embodies these principles, with small and large candlesticks, hanging and standing tealight holders, and nostalgic decorative snow globes which tell a whole winter story. The designs are inspired by the dark, cold winter nights of the north, and the dramatic endless summer days, as well as the extraordinary natural theatre that plays around these extremes. The well-known and much-discussed Finnsdottir Ceramic Tales pieces depict winter and summer scenes inspired by local nature, leaving space in the centre for cosy candles or tea lights for a thoroughly hygge atmosphere. The intricate winter stories dance with details like delicate mushrooms, fir trees and animals.
From the Ming vase to Nordic design: vase sets full of life and colour
For Dottir, the essence of Danish design is great craftsmanship with a long tradition. It makes every product unique, but the refreshing brand knows no boundaries. From the Ming vase to modern Scandi design, the wilderness-inspired Dottir vases are sure to make a statement in your home too. Inspired by Nordic mythology and rooted in traditional Danish craftsmanship, the brand nevertheless chose to manufacture their designs in partnership with the Chinese Dehua in the province of Fujian –whose Blanc-de-Chine porcelain is world-famous. Dottir ceramics can take years to develop. There are only a few manufacturing facilities in the world that can master the complicated glazing processes required for the unique designs of Dottir Vases and Dottir Winter Stories pieces. They make the brilliant glaze of the pieces shine and bring the lovely scenes to life. The art is in creating a product design that is eye-catching, but that also blends harmoniously with different interior styles. The Pipanella Flock and Samsurium Minibell vases do this, with their fantastic shapes and patterns and unique colours Each individual vase appears unique, but the vase sets from the Danish brand still combine together stylishly and look like a well-thought-out collection.
