Almedahls - beautiful patterns from Sweden

Almedahls is strictly connected to the Nordic design tradition and is one of the oldest companies in the western part of Sweden. The Swedish fabric company was founded in 1846 by Hans Wessel, when he established a textile factory in Mölndalsån near Göteborg. The company originated as a textile mill and bleaching plant on a farm. However, Almedahls quickly cultivated and produced textile design products. The company is named after Alma, the founder's daughter. At its best, in the 1940s, the company employed 2000 people with several divisions. After 1950, the company ran into trouble and was split up and sold.

Young female designers help create design classics

The Almedahls brand reoriented itself during this period and sought out young female designers to drive a renewal of the collection. Especially in the golden years of Scandinavian design (about 1950 to 1970) were created during this period great design classics, which are still cornerstones of the brand's collection. This is largely due to the work of the great designers who were active in this period for the company. Among these were Größen like Astrid Sampe or Marianne Nilsson.

Astrid Sampe

Astrid Sampe has worked for several companies and has also furnished large projects such as passenger ships. Her career took off at Nordiska Kompaniet, a well-known Swedish department store chain. Her collaboration with Almedahls can be traced back to the early 1950s. The brand and designer presented Linnelinjen at the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg. The new designs attracted great attention due to never seen before sizes, patterns and colors, and were mainly transferred to napkins and tableware.

Collaboration with Marianne Westman

Marianne Westman was one of Sweden's leading designers in the 1950s. At that time she designed, among other things, the pattern Picnic. Almedahls, however, started the collaboration in the summer of 2009. As the first cooperation, the pattern Picnic was relaunched with modern products. Picnic was followed by Pomona, Frisco and Belle Amie.

The brand today

The company today focuses on just a few markets, such as Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and the USA. In all other countries, the beautiful patterns of Swedish weaving are very rare to find. The most famous are Persons kryddskåp, Picnic and Sill, from which there is a wide range of beautiful items, from carrier bags to coffee mugs, from cutting boards to trivets, from trays to shawls, and so on. Furthermore, Almedahls offers a large collection of Scandi tableware made of half-linen in typical Swedish design.
