Orrefors - Glass art from Sweden

If you could open the doors to the famous workshops of the Swedish glassworks Orrefors, spectacular sights would await you. The path of glass from a molten, unformed mass to filigree glass art is long and hot. At Orrefors, everything is made by hand: In addition to the designer and a professional glassblower, cutters, painters, engravers and other craftsmen are sometimes needed until a decorative bowl or an Orrefors drinking glass leaves the hallowed halls of Swedish glassblower identity.

Tumblers, stemware, bowls and dishes – decorative and practical

The Orrefors glassworks was launched in 1898 in the town of the same name in Småland in Sweden. It is one of the milestones of the art glass scene in Europe. Under Edvard Hald and Simon Gate in the 1950s, however, there was a departure from the attitude that high-quality glass must always be cut and engraved. The two originators of art glass preferred to create effects through color designs and refined the glass craft with techniques such as the Ariel and Ravenna techniques. In 1989 Orrefors bought the Årforsgruppen, which included Kosta Boda. Particularly noteworthy in the collection are the brilliant tea lights in a simple design made of high-quality crystal glass and the wine stemware series Orrefors Difference, which caused a small revolution among wine connoisseurs.

Take a devil with Orrefors

Orrefors is an integral part of the renaissance of Swedish design beginning in the 1960s. The company's drinking glasses and decorative items are visibly special, yet always elegant. Sure to catch your eye in the assortment of glassware is the shot glass with the black devil. Gunnar Cyrén drew it to do justice to the Swedish expression fürs schnapps drinking „ take a devil“. The little black devil is thereby elevated to a king, as the base of the glass his crown holds the spirit in place. The series, designed in 1992, is complemented by various drinking glasses and is part of the official table service of the Nobel Prize. Hence the name of the collection Nobel. Each shot glass is thereby a real unicum, which was manufactured and painted by hand. Every year it appears in a new color. The series therefore also enjoys great popularity among collectors.
