Marimekko - 50 years Tasaraita

The head of the Finnish cult brand Marimekko Armi Ratia commissioned in 1968 the Finnish textile designer Annika Rimala with the design of a Jersey outerwear collection for jeans for men and women. Armi Ratia wanted to offer a collection with high comfort in the assortment of their company, but also to emphasize the equality between men and women. Annika Rimala designed the pattern Tasaraita. Tasaraita means the same stripes. In the broader sense, the pattern name stands for gender equality. Thus, the world's first unisex clothing collection was born 50 years ago. For cultural reasons, Scandinavia played a pioneering role in the time of this social change. In Scandinavia, women were always more socially recognized than in other cultures. Furthermore, the Scandinavian design was characterized by social compatibility and functionalism.
These backgrounds paired with the creative company run to the birth of Tasaraita collection.
First Marimekko offered night shirts (Piktämekko, Uni) and T-shirts (Lyhythihia, Pitkähiha) with the pattern with the same stripes. Later, fits such as Ilma (3/4 sleeve shirt for ladies) with the pattern were also offered.
Meanwhile, Tasaraita is the basic collection of the fashion section of the Finnish label. Each year, in addition to a contuning collection, many seasonal colors are offered. The fits are constantly adapted to the fashion development.
Furthermore, the cult pattern is also often used in ready made textiles in jersey or other items from the renowned brand from Finland.
Today, the clothing collection is one of the representatives of the higher quality jersey clothing. It impresses with very good workmanship and fits. Unique is the story of the Tasaraita collection.
