Birds by Toikka - Glass Design since 1972

Oiva Toikka is one of the leading glass designers of Finland. He belongs alongside Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva to the most creative Finnish glass designers. In 1972 he started with his Birds in the oldest glassworks of Finland in Nuutajärvi.

The ancient art of glassblowing

The birds are free deformed with the help of a few tools such as scissors, tongs, etc. That means they are not blown into a mold but shaped by the glassmaker by blowing, drawing with graphite plates and small homemade tools. A free deformation of glass requires highest technical skills. Furthermore, the designer must know the complex material very well, so that the processing can be carried out largely error-free. In the liquid state glass is a highly sensitive material, by surface injury bound gas can solve (blistering), by contact with the tools it can also lead to undesirable crystallization, to name just a few problems. In particular, with free manual work it often leads to these typical errors.

Each original is unique

But Oiva Toikka is a real expert of this craftsmanship, so he prevents in designing the Birds. His Birds are a real decorative highlight through his design. Through light and reflection they always look different and you will find new nuances in these natural but artistic glass objects. Through the elaborate handwork each piece precipitates slightly different and is unique. Often and even Iittala tried to copy this extraordinary series, but lack of glass processing knowledge of the designers never succeeded. Yearly there is offered the Bird and the Egg of the year, which are limited. Since 2014, the Birds are manufactured by skilled glassmakers in the Iittala glassworks.
