The Scotsman James Finlayson founded the Finlayson cotton weaving mill in Tampere in 1820. Spinning machines were initially manufactured there, and cotton products started being produced in 1828. James sold the young company in 1836 to return to his home country. The spinning mill was one of Scandinavia's largest cotton mills

between 1840 and 1920. In 1882, the company already had electric lighting and was thus the first company to do so in the Nordic countries. Around 1900, the company employed 3,300 individuals. A separate district with apartments, schools, hospitals, etc. developed in and around the mill in Tampere. The company even opened the first savings bank and cooperative in the city.

In 1934, the company bought the Finnish competitor Forssa and then later merged with Vaasan Puuvilla Oy in 1964. Finlayson then went through a period of changing ownership until a major crash occurred in 2008: Finlayson-Forssa production operations went bankrupt and the Tampere plant was closed in 2009. The home textiles division, however, continued to exist and has since been based in Helsinki.

Today, the brand is the leading provider of bed linens and other home textiles in Finland. Well-known designs include the Coronna pattern from 1958 by Aini Vaari, Elefantti by Laina Koskela, and the Aalto Waves by Eine Lepistö.

The label also offers a large collection featuring the popular Finnish troll Moomin. The character from Tove Jansson's stories has meanwhile become a cult figure in Finland and in many other countries.
