Design House Stockholm - since 1992

The Design House Stockholm company was founded by Anders Färdig in 1992. Anders grew up in Boda in Småland in southern Sweden. An important person present during his childhood was his godfather and mentor Erik Rosén. The very agile and creative Erik Rosén was initially the director of the glassworks in Boda and was able to convince Erik Höglund, a young artist from Stockholm (1932-1998), to join his small manufactory.

Kosta Boda is born

The artist Högl revolutionised the glassworks's collection with his artistic designs and drew global attention to the glassworks and its new type of art glass. Due to capacity constraints, Erik Rosén also worked together with the glassworks in Åfors and Kosta in the 1960s. The three glassworks merged later on, resulting in the world-famous Kosta Boda brand.

Further influence

What's more, Erik Rosén also founded both the Boda Nova and Boda Smide companies. The latter became internationally known for its beautiful hand forged candle holders, which were often paired with glass insets for candles. The company still exists, but has lost ground in the international market due to a lack of new products and high prices.

Boda Nova was founded by Erik Rosén in the early 1970s. The collection of the label included modern, functional and beautiful formal dining products. Designer couple John Melin and Signe Persson-Melin's designs characterised the range of products. However, the brand was sold to Höganäs Keramik in 1988 and after several changes in ownership, Höganäs Keramik and Boda Nova were sold to the Iittala Group. The brand was discontinued by the group in 2012 following a restructuring.

The path to the Design House Stockholm brand

Anders Färdig was thus influenced and inspired by one of the most influential managers during the heyday of Swedish design. As a young man Anders worked as a designer for Höganäs Keramik, Boda Nova and Rörstrand. He later held managerial positions at Kosta Boda, Boda Nova and the Duka retail chain.

He decided to start his own business in 1992 and founded the Design House Stockholm company. The company's mission was to offer unique designer pieces created predominantly by Swedish designers. The products of the Design House Stockholm label are elegant, functional and have a special charm. The brand's final breakthrough came in 1997, when he added the Block lamp (a design by the then young Harri Koskinen) to the Design House Stockholm range. The innovative lamp, which captivates with its simplicity, achieved worldwide recognition and was immediately included in the collection and exhibition of the Museum of Modern Art. Today Anders Färdig says: "I had no chance!" and by that he means that his path was predetermined. Thanks to his godfather's strong influence, Anders Färdig is now one of the most competent and influential people adept at marketing sophisticated Swedish design and nowadays uses his expertise to advance Design House Stockholm.
